Sunrise Boat Launch Renovation
Purpose for the Renovation:
This widely popular boat launch has been closed for nearly a
year due to safety concerns. Erosion from river currents
split the ramp, making it unstable and hazardous to use. In
addition, cyclists were endangered when vehicles backed
their trailers onto the launch. This was especially
dangerous during the early morning bike commute, when
visibility is low.
Project Description:
The project will completely renovate the existing launch
site and parking area; realign the bike trail to provide
safer travel for vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians and
equestrians; provide a new restroom and picnic amenities;
and significantly improve the safety, access and overall
appeal of the boating facility.
Environmental Mitigation:
The construction will have an
impact to surrounding vegetation but will be mitigated in
several ways including planting more than 200 oak trees near
the picnic area, planting as many oak trees along the old
trail as the existing tree canopies will allow, planting .5
acre of riparian vegetation along the south bank of the
American River both upstream and downstream of the project
site, and donating funds to restore aquatic and riparian
habitats within the American River Parkway.
The project is funded by
grants from the California Department of Boating and Waterways,
California Department of Fish & Game's Bay-Delta Sport Fishing
Enhancement Stamp program, and Propositions 12 and 40.
