Welcome! Howe Avenue Access, where the river is deep and swift, and
blue-green as a gemstone! Its closeness to California State University,
Sacramento and many businesses make it an ideal location to enjoy the American
River. Despite its closeness to the road, the river’s clay banks and riverside
vegetation give it a wild feel. Here, the bike trail joins with a flood-control
levee, giving a first-hand look at the measures Sacramento must take to keep the
river in its banks, and some of County Parks’ unique partnerships.
How to Get There
Howe Avenue is easy to access from U.S. Highway 50. Simply take the Howe Ave.
off-ramp and head north. Turn right immediately onto La Riviera Drive. Follow
the La Riviera off-ramp straight to the park’s entrance.
Activities
• The water of the Howe Avenue Access looks inviting, but swimming and diving
are not encouraged. Swimmers must be careful to follow water safety precautions
if they choose to swim in this often-cold, fast-moving water.
• A car-top launch allows small boats and rafts to be launched into the American
River.
•The Jedediah Smith Memorial Bike Trail snakes along just across the Howe Avenue
bridge from the Access, which offers restroom facilities and a drinking fountain
to weary riders.
