Just minutes from the city of Sacramento, the delta area feels like a million miles away from busy city life. Wandering along scenic Highway 160 throughout the southern portion of Sacramento County, the Delta area is rich in history and folklore. Whether you're exploring islands, fishing, swimming or enjoying a picnic with your family, you'll notice the pace of life slows as you enter this beautiful and majestic world. From fall through spring, it is a quiet getaway for people in search of back-road adventures and towns that haven't changed in 50 years. In summer, the waterways become full of people enjoying boating, waterskiing, and windsurfing. Specific activities, features and directions for some popular access sites are located in the links below:
In spite of its name, Hogback Island Access does not have any piggy denizens. Rather, this facility is perfect for people who enjoy fishing, recreational boating, rowing, picnics and barbecues. Located off of Highway 220 at Grand Island Road, Hogback is easy to find and easier to enjoy.
Located near Rio Vista, this small site is located conveniently just off Highway 160, at Sacramento River mile 14. Fishing and claming are the main attractions here, although windsurfing has become popular as well.
The Island´s proximity to the mouth of the Sacramento River makes it prime fishing habitat for salmon, steelhead, striped bass and sturgeon. Its location at the north end of the San Francisco Bay also provides strong, constant breezes from May to October, making Sherman Island one of the prime windsurfing sites in the nation. You can access Sherman Island by turning right off of Hwy 160 at Sherman Island Rd.
Located near Sacramento International Airport along the Sacramento River, this facility is a perfect site for boaters and their families. Picnic areas shaded by oak and flowering trees are located near the boat launch ramp. The river is wide here and lined with trees at both banks.
